About Music Appreciation

The Music Appreciation class at Brea Olinda High School is a course designed to introduce students to the world of music.  The class is a lecture/project based course where students will be required to complete college level written research papers, oral presentations, music analysis, and attend several performances of each of the groups within the BOHS Performing Arts department.  Students who successfully complete both semesters of the Music Appreciation course will fulfill the (f) requirement for the University of California entrance requirements.  Students taking this class will be put through a rigorous academic program and are expected to perform at a high standard.  Any questions regarding the Music Appreciation course should be directed to Mr. Bartell.

Please feel free to download the Course Syllabus.

Course Assignments:

Students will be assigned several research papers over the course of the semester.  Papers will only be accepted via the turnitin web service; papers turned in late or by hand will not be accepted.  The order in which these papers will be done is as follows.

  • Buddy Boldin, Paul Whiteman, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis

Students will have the opportunity to share their musical interests as well.  Students will need to prepare classroom presentations utilizing various forms of media including, but not limited to power point presentations, poster board displays, music excepts, and oral presentations.  Students present their projects in front of the class and educate us on their favorite musician, band, or group.  All material must first be approved by Mr. Bartell.  Foul language, inappropriate imagery, or any other offensive material will not be allowed in the presentations.  This is the only aspect of the projects that will be subject to approval.  The choice of who the student does the presentation on will be completely up to them.

Students will also be required to attend several of the performances offered through the instrumental music, vocal music, dance, and drama departments.  Each student must attend two (2) events for each of these particular programs.  Not only must the students attend these presentations they must also turn in a written analysis of the program they saw.  The review given by the student should cover aspects such as if they enjoyed the performance or not, if they learned anything from viewing the presentation, and if there was a particular aspect of the performance that they felt could have been better presented for optimum audience appeal.  These are only a few of the suggested areas for review, however, the student is free to discuss their opinions of what they observed.  All reviews must be written in essay form.

Later in the semester students will need to complete listening logs.  Pieces of music will be posted on this site and the student must download and listen to the piece.  Further details as to what is expected from the students in their analysis will be discussed in class and the proper forms available online.
